The Mumbai Massacre

It has been quite a long time that I have written something on my blog.
Whatever happened in Mumbai from 26 November 2008 to 29 November 2008 forced me to put my thoughts into words.

(Disclaimer: Being an Indian, I exercise my right to freedom of expression in this article. Comment if you have any problem with this.)

Frequently asked Questions -

Q. What happened in Mumbai recently?
Public Massacre

Q. Why did this happen?
Some Terrorists weren't happy that we are reasonably happy. Since they wanted to show their presence again by making us sad, they did it this time.

Q. Who were their targets this time?
The upper crest of India and the businessmen of other countries who wanted to do business in India.

Q. How many were there? How did they come? How many were killed?
Check all the usual questions and answers in any Indian news website.

Less frequently asked questions -

Q. What is the root cause of this issue? What is the permanent solution?
This question came into my mind as I am a software engineer working in a big financial corporation.
We are asked not only to do temporary fixes but also work towards getting a permanent solution so that the problem doesn't reoccur.

Some people argue that the root cause of these attacks is the improper security measures in the country.
Others say - Failed Intelligence
Few others say - Inadequate laws to counter terror
and - Lack of good governance
and - Officers sleeping in their duty
and - etc.. etc..

I differ from others on this. I say - Kashmir.

ok.. Now we have identified the root cause. Lets talk about the solution.
Let us say that we are generous enough and give away Kashmir to the self-proclaimed freedom fighters.
Are we safe now?
The answer is No.

Their extremist thoughts will say - India has already done the maximum damage by killing their freedom-fighters (in other words - terrorists).
They shall have their revenge.... and their war continues till eternity..

I do not know what they are fighting for! They are never gonna get Kashmir!

In US and the UK, there ain't any Kashmir! They blasted bombs there too! What do they want from the rest of the world?

"They" do not only include Lashkar-e-toiba or other Pak-Based organisations.
"They" include all the Islamic Extremist all over the world.
"They" are the front-runners of Religious Intolerance.

These extremist groups definitely damage the Great Religion of Islam and its people.

But I would rather say that these Extremist groups are not small. They are always interlinked. They get great amounts of funds from all over the world. These funds directly aid them in procuring destructive materials.

How can any human, in the name of God, the allah, no matter what the circumstance is, carry out such a massacre on the common man - another human??

Well, no human can.. Whoever did this are no humans!!

Everybody knows where these people get trained.

So, I change my stand now.
The permanent solution to this problem is not in handing over the beautiful Kashmir to these ruthless animals.

The permanent solution is to eradicate the Master Minds and motivators, catch each and every blood-thirsty terrorist hiding out there in the training camp and kill each and every one of them.

The execution is in the hands of the Heads of our nation as well as of our "poisonous neighbour".

Zizou's Act justified....

Zizou's act on sunday night is completely justified. At some point in everyone's life, the self comes before anything else. And considering Zidane's tough living with his family in his earlier days, head-butt seems to be pretty normal for what he has done to Materrazi. Every human gets angry. And professionalism doesn't come into picture where his personal life was at stake. Zizou, you need not apologise to anyone on anything and nor need you say what he said to you. Go ahead Zizou, we are with you and fear not the world.

And never worry about the red card. You deserved that too.

;-)

Hats off to a great player like you. You will be remembered forever.

Flash News- We Started cooking

April 22, 2006 is a significant day for the occcupants of B-407 Spring Blossom. Jagathala and deepak getting the cylinder to facilitate cooking @ home.
Veteran Sathish Kumar, the Head, takes up the challenge with a cool attitude by preparing a nice Tur Dal ki Khichdi supplemented by the Tamatar Chutney, the Andhra way (hot and spicy), by Andhra's very own son, Chandra!!

Also, the dinner was supplemented by immersion fried appalam. Altogether, 6 people had a nice dinner on saturday night. 'Thala' Sathish Kumar had posed a great challenge for the other cook by his wonderful Khichdi!!!

The next day (Sunday) started off with Maggi noodles for everyone. Sathish and Jagathala ate maggi without any vegetable additve in it whereas deepak, chandra and subbu had it with all the vegetables.

Now, It was the lunch time and people were getting hungry. It was subbu's cooking today. Under tremendous pressure posed by the insurgents, subbu was nervous enough to screw up with the Tuur Dal :-). Thanks to sathish again, the tuur dal was cured. With the combined team effort, potato and carrot were cut. And subbu began with sambhar, it was a potato and carrot sambhar with onion as the ingredient. The sambhar powder was from the home still a lot was dependent on his hand.

Sambhar was successfully finished but few were ready to take the first taste. Then carrot curry was made. The cooking lasted for 2 hours and it was already 2.45. Sathish kumar ordered a halt and serve order. Hence no appalam. Then started our eating part. And to everyone's surprise, the food was good. In no time it was over but everyone had their stomach filled. For all the internet publishing and the 'rowsu' that subbu had done before, it was mandatory that the food was good. He passed out with distinction in this case.

The evening was marked by a nice onion pakoda/bhajji by the Great Sathish Kumar. Kudos to the Team work that made the mammoth task look so simple.

During the tenure of the weekend, there emerged one Center Of Excellence (CoE). That was Deepak (Cheers!!) for the 'Purifying Utensils' Job. He even plans to buy apron for this specialised job of his.

Additions and comments to be given here.....

Gas Vanthachu !!!!!!

:-)

Finally, the long awaited gas has come thanks to the hard work of Mr.Jala Jala
But we should follow all the precautions carefully before use.
The following are few of the things that we need to do before the actual launch.
Makkal are advised to do this as soon as possible.

1. Buy/ Get plates to eat.
2. Glass to drink milk/ water.
3. 'Cleaning the utensils' job extra for the maid. We have to settle this thing up without paying much extra.
4. The use of Calendar (as earlier suggested by Jala Jala) for "selavu kanakku (expenditure arithmetic)" has to be done with immediate effect.
5. I have to search my "samayal kurippu notepad".
6. Regular timings should be maintained (makkal are advised to come home early in the evening so that we can have dinner together)
7. Full support to each other.
8. The first thing to be put to heat on the gas has to be "MILK".
9. Makkal those who don't know how to light the stove (i am not talking about deepak!!!), should never go near it even in the worst circumstance.
10. Let us be very very careful.
11. Lecture and demonstration of "Practical safety consideration" will be taken tonight by His Highness Mr. Sathish Kumar (Nattamai Valga, Valarga, Velga!!).
12. We all have to wake up early in the morning (If even 1 person sleeps, cooking bight be a hard work).
13. The Cook should not be blamed for any taste related malfunctionality in the food prepared.
14. With adequate support provided, we can have a light breakfast in the morning (20 minutes time dedication) and a nice meal in the night (1 hour dedication).
15. A meeting will be held tonight at 10.00 PM sharp. Attendance of the all the occupants mandatory. No apologies expected.
16. What about Kendre and chandra? (The only question i have posed!).
17. A replica of this TO-DO list is also available on the internet. check out this URL below.
http://wastevenky.blogspot.com/
18. The 'Kitchen medai' has to be cleaned so as to accomodate the gas and the stove with immediate effect.
19. Additions, Comments and suggestions are always welcome.
20. Last but not the least. Veg and Non-Veg Separate utensils (This is my kind request to all). After all, this is our home.

Godfather Character List

Vito Corleone -
Played by Marlon Brando (1) and Robert De Niro (2) Founder and head of the Corleone family and one of the trilogy’s two protagonists. As an older man, Vito is a shrewd Mafia boss known as the Godfather. As a younger man, he is a ruthlessly ambitious Sicilian immigrant in New York’s Little Italy in the early twentieth century. Vito is a warm and loving father and husband. He wears his hair slicked back and seems incapable of talking without mumbling.

Michael Corleone -
Played by Al PacinoThe trilogy’s other protagonist. Michael is Vito’s youngest son. At the beginning of The Godfather, he is uninvolved in the Mafia and seems headed for a successful career in politics or another “legitimate” field. Over the course of the film, he abandons these plans. He joins the family business and succeeds his father as head of the Corleone family. A cold-blooded Mafia don with no tolerance for dissent or treachery, Michael is even bolder, more violent, and more ambitious than Vito, and he becomes fantastically rich in the casino business. He proves much less successful in his personal life. Michael seems incapable of relaxing enough to smile, and his tense relationship with his wife, Kay, whom he divorces, is a constant source of anguish.

Kay Adams Corleone -
Played by Diane KeatonMichael’s girlfriend at the beginning of The Godfather and later his wife. Kay is an all-American girl from New Hampshire who falls in love with a decorated World War II veteran and winds up a Mafia don’s wife. At first, she plays dumb and chooses to ignore the violence that goes on around her. But eventually, she rebels against the prohibitions on her movement, Michael’s cold distance, and the threats to her and her family, leaving Michael at the end of The Godfather Part II. By The Godfather Part III, she has remarried.

Tom Hagen -
Played by Robert DuvallThe Corleone family lawyer and sometime chief advisor, or consigliere. An orphan on the street, Tom was adopted by Vito and grew up as a member of the Corleone family. Although he is intricately involved in the family business, Tom is not a violent man and rarely gets his hands dirty. At times he comes across as a voice of reason in family debates, while at other times he is timid, overly cautious, and unimaginative.

(Santino) Sonny Corleone -
Played by James CaanVito’s oldest son. Sonny is hot-headed, violent, and reckless, a combination that leads him into a death trap set by a rival family. A philanderer, Sonny has an illegitimate child, Vincent Mancini, who succeeds Michael as head of the Corleone family in The Godfather Part III.

Fredo Corleone -
Played by John CazaleVito’s middle son. Weak-willed and terribly insecure, Fredo is overshadowed by his older brother’s reckless passion and his younger brother’s unshakeable confidence. He briefly finds himself living the life of a decadent playboy in Las Vegas, but his comfort with women and drink is only a cover for his essential unease.

Connie Corleone Rizzi -
Played by Talia ShireVito’s daughter. At the opening of The Godfather, Connie marries Carlo Rizzi, who turns out to be an abusive, adulterous terror. After Michael kills Carlo, Connie enters a period of rebellion against her brother, behaving like a spoiled, overgrown child, pathetic, lost, and very angry. By the end of The Godfather Part II, however, she regains control of her life, and in Part III she emerges as the backbone of the family.

Carlo Rizzi -
Played by Gianni RussoConnie’s abusive husband. Carlo betrays the Corleone family, tipping off Sonny’s killers, and is killed by Michael for his transgression.

Apollonia Corleone -
Played by Simonetta StefanelliMichael’s first wife. While hiding out in Sicily in The Godfather, Michael falls in love at first sight with Apollonia, a sixteen-year-old beauty. Just days after their marriage, Apollonia is killed in a car bomb intended for Michael.

Clemenza -
Played by Richard S. Castellano (1) and B. Kirby, Jr. (2)A member of the Corleone crime family and longtime associate of Vito. Clemenza is jolly, easygoing, and well-fed, but he is also a vicious killer. He gives Michael lessons in cooking and firing a gun in The Godfather.

Tessio -
Played by Abe Vigoda (1, 2) and John Aprea (2)A member of the Corleone family and longtime associate of Vito. Cleverer than Clemenza, Tessio betrays Michael at the end of The Godfather.

Don Fanucci -
Played by Gaston MoschinAn early-twentieth-century Little Italy Mafia don. Fanucci is a small-time extortionist who dresses like a big-time pimp. Murdering him is Vito Corleone’s first step toward gaining power in his neighborhood.

Barzini -
Played by Richard ConteThe head of one of the five Mafia families of New York.

Bonasera -
Played by Salvatore CorsittoAn undertaker who asks Vito to avenge his daughter’s beating.

Johnny Fontane -
Played by Al MartinoA famous singer and actor, like Frank Sinatra. Though a successful performer, Johnny Fontane comes to Vito, his godfather, for help with his career on more than one occasion.

Sollozzo -
Played by Al LettieriA gangster known as the Turk. Sollozzo is involved in the narcotics trade and is backed by Barzini and Tattaglia (another Mafia boss).

Captain McCluskey -
Played by Sterling HaydenA corrupt, bigoted policeman who moonlights as Sollozzo’s bodyguard.

Jack Woltz -
Played by John MarleyA Hollywood film producer who refuses to give Johnny Fontane a part in his latest war movie. Woltz is crass and materialist, more capitalist than artist.

Hyman Roth -
Played by Lee StrasbergAn aging Jewish gangster and an old colleague of Vito. Roth partners with Michael in business dealings in Las Vegas and Havana, Cuba, in The Godfather Part II. Roth is terminally ill and seems to be dying throughout the film, but he still finds time between doctor’s visits to manipulate foreign presidents and plan assassinations.

Johnny Ola -
Played by Dominic ChianeseRoth’s right-hand man.

Frankie Pentangeli -
Played by Michael V. GazzoThe head of the New York branch of the Corleone family after Michael moves most of the operation to Las Vegas. Pentangeli is a Mafia traditionalist who feels that Michael isn’t running things like Vito did. But despite their differences, Pentangeli refuses to testify against Michael during congressional hearings on the Mafia. While serving out a prison term for contempt of Congress, he kills himself, reenacting the ritual suicide of a failed Roman conspirator.

Senator Pat Geary -
Played by G. D. SpradlinA corrupt Nevada senator. One of the least attractive characters in the trilogy, Geary is two-faced, bigoted, and adulterous. He defends Michael in the congressional hearings, but only because Tom caught him in Vegas, unconscious in bed with a murdered prostitute. Geary’s presence in the movie is a sign of Coppola’s cynicism about politics.

Mama Corleone -
Played by Morgana King (1, 2) and Francesca de Sapio (2) Vito’s loyal, loving wife.

Anthony Corleone -
Played by James Gounaris (2) and Franc D’Ambrosio (3)Michael’s son. Rather than joining the family business, Anthony pursues a career as an opera singer.
Mary Corleone - Played by Sofia CoppolaMichael’s daughter. Closer to Michael than her brother is, Mary is head of the Vito Corleone Foundation for the Poor of Sicily. To her father’s dismay, she becomes romantically involved with her cousin, Vincent Mancini.

Vincent Mancini -
Played by Andy GarciaMichael’s nephew and successor as head of the Corleone family. Over the course of The Godfather Part III, Vincent evolves from a leather jacket-wearing street hood into a silk suit-donning don. Thug or Godfather, he is always a ladykiller.

Andrew Hagen -
Played by John SavageTom Hagen’s son and a Catholic priest.

Joey Zasa -
Played by Joe MantegnaA smalltime gangster who has become boss of the old Corleone neighborhood in Little Italy in The Godfather Part III. Publicity hungry, arrogant, and insecure, Joey challenges both Michael and Vincent.

Don Altobello -
Played by Eli WallachA scheming old-time mafioso who pretends to play the role of peacemaker.

Don Tommasino -
Played by Mario Cotone (1, 2) and Vittorio Duse (3)Michael’s friend and guardian in Sicily.

Licio Lucchesi -
Played by Enzo RobattiThe leader of the Vatican conspirators in The Godfather Part III who poison the new pope and plot unsuccessfully to kill Michael.

Archbishop Gliday -
Played by Donal DonnellyA frail, twitchy-fingered, chain-smoking, corrupt archbishop.

Al Neri -
Played by Richard BrightOne of Michael’s enforcers.

Cardinal Lamberto/Pope John Paul 1 -
Played by Raf ValloneAn earnest, caring, genuinely devout priest who hears Michael’s confession. Lamberto is assassinated shortly after his election as pope.

B. J. Harrison -
Played by George HamiltonMichael’s right-hand man in The Godfather Part III. Harrison, a silver-haired, blue-blooded, financial guru, couldn’t be more different from the slick-haired (or balding), ring-kissing mafiosi who attend to Michael in the earlier films. Harrison’s presence symbolizes Michael’s desire to be perceived as “legitimate.”

Play your cards well

A wealthy man decided to go on a safari in Africa. He took his faithful pet Dachshund dog along for company. One day, the dachshund starts chasing butterflies and before long the dachshund discovers that he is lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the obvious intention of having lunch. The dachshund thinks, "I'm in deep trouble now! Then he noticed some bones on the ground close by and immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the dachshund exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard. I wonder if there are any more around here." Hearing this, the leopard halts his attack in mid-stride, as a look of terror comes over him, and slinks away into the trees. "Whew," says the leopard. "That was close. That dachshund! Nearly had me."

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes. But the dachshund saw him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figured that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine."
Now the dachshund sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks "What am I going to do now?" But instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet... and just when they get close enough to hear, the dachshund says......................
"Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off half an hour ago to bring me another leopard.
"Life consists not in holding good cards, but in playing those you hold well..............................

Great lessons learnt

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:
"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?
I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain
One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The MN took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached..
It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nat King Cole.

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
"How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.
"Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.
By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.
"Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied
The little boy again counted his coins.
"I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies..
You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.
In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.
Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!
Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...
Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it, if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.
He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away?"
Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.
"Work like you don't need the money, Love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching."
